The first people to inhabit the island were the native Avarak Indians. When Columb visited Jamaica in 1494 he announced the island a Spanish possession and turns the local population in slaves. Most of them died of diseases and overwork. Then many Africans were brought as slaves and now more than 90% of population have African ancestors. In 1962 Jamaica was announced for independent republic.
